4 DIY Tricks to Refresh Your Workspace

Stuck in a rut? Looking to change up your work day by trying out a standing work set up or making some other adjustment? A standing desk doesn’t always mean you need to purchase new furniture. And sometimes all you need is a change in scenery. We’ve created a few DIY tips and tricks to help you refresh your workspace without having to make a big investment in time or money.

1. Paper Ream or Book Tower

If you’re looking for an easy and affordable standing desk hack then look no further. If your office has a printer, then it probably has a stash of paper reams. This offers an easy DIY sit-to-stand desk set-up. And in the event you don’t have a printer, you can substitute the paper reams with books. You will need three stacks of paper (or books): one for your computer, one for your keyboard, and one for your mouse. The stack for your computer should set your computer screen high enough so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level; obviously, this will vary depending on your height. You will want the stack for your keyboard to be high enough that your arms rest evenly at your side, elbows at roughly 90-degrees. The stack for your mouse should be at the same height as your keyboard.

2. Shoe Rack or Shelf

Another easy and affordable standing desk option is a shoe rack or stackable shelf. Most stores, such as Target or Walmart, will have these shelves for less than $15. All you have to do is place the shelf on top of your desk, put your laptop or computer screen on top, and you’re good to go! Don’t forget to use the paper reams or books if you need a little more height, and to elevate your keyboard and mouse for proper ergonomics.

3. Change of Scenery

Your work environment impacts productivity, focus, and habits. It’s important to change it up every once in a while to get a little mental refresh. Next time you’re feeling constrained by working at the same desk or in the same space every day, try moving your desk outside! This works especially well for remote workers. 4. Pallets

This is a great option for those of you who work from home. You can find people giving pallets away for free on Craigslist. And, they’re easy to sand down and throw some paint on if they’re going to be staying in your house. So, if you have a little extra time this weekend, give this DIY project a shot.

Remember if you’re just getting started with a standing desk setup, use our 70:20:10 approach. Spend 70% of your day working as you were before (either sitting or standing). Stand (ideally while on a FluidStance deck) 20% of your day. Then use the remaining 10% to engage in real-life movement and exercise.
