The Science of Movement

Movement is Medicine.

The Science Behind FluidStance Balance Boards

Standing gets you out of the chair. FluidStance gets you moving.

FluidStance balance boards introduce subtle, natural movement into the workday — without turning work into a workout.

Independent research from the University of Idaho, Mayo Clinic, Westmont College, and Heeluxe Lab has measured what happens when people work on a FluidStance balance board.

You move more. Your body does more. And you can keep working while you do it.

Peer-Reviewed Research

University of Idaho

Published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise

Researchers compared sitting, standing, and standing on a FluidStance Level with 30 adults in sedentary occupations — measuring oxygen consumption, energy expenditure, heart rate, productivity, fatigue, and pain.

FluidStance produced the highest oxygen consumption and energy expenditure of all three conditions.

~17%
More Oxygen Consumption
vs. sitting (+4% vs. standing)

~16.5%
More Energy Expenditure
vs. sitting (+4% vs. standing)
0
Loss in Typing Productivity

Takeaway: Adding movement increased metabolic activity without getting in the way of the work.

Clinical Testing

Mayo Clinic

Mayo Clinic tested the FluidStance Level across sitting, standing, FluidStance, and walking conditions with 30 office workers.

19.2%
Greater Energy Expenditure vs. Sitting
NEAT® CERTIFIED

The Level exceeded the criteria required for NEAT® Certification for standing — Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, the energy we expend through everyday movement outside of structured exercise.

Not a workout. Movement while you work.

University Research

Westmont College

Researchers compared normal standing with standing on the FluidStance Level using direct measurements of oxygen consumption. Presented to the American College of Sports Medicine.

~21%
Greater Oxygen Consumption
vs. normal standing

+14.8
Additional Calories Per Hour

A standing desk changes your position. FluidStance adds movement to it.

Biomechanics Lab

Heeluxe Lab

Heeluxe Lab measured the natural movement generated by FluidStance during real desk work — not a gym balance board, but usable movement designed for the workday.

Heeluxe Lab Study

23.98°
Total Ankle Range of Motion
plantarflexion & dorsiflexion

~15%
Higher Heart Rate
vs. sitting at a computer

The goal isn't instability. It's usable movement.

Customer Research · n=464

Science Matters. So Does Wanting to Use It.

Laboratory research tells us what happens physiologically. Customers tell us what happens to the workday. In independent research with 464 FluidStance users:

83%
Felt happier using FluidStance

76%
Felt more comfortable

66%
Stood more at work

95%
Satisfied or very satisfied

Because movement only matters if you actually do it.

Different Researchers. Different Tests. A Consistent Result.

The studies did not use identical protocols, so their percentages should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable. What matters is the pattern.

University of Idaho
Greater O₂ & energy expenditure than sitting and standing — no productivity penalty.
Mayo Clinic
19.2% greater energy expenditure than sitting.
Westmont College
~21% greater oxygen consumption than ordinary standing.
Heeluxe Lab
Higher heart rate, measurable ankle movement, no increase in typing errors.

Same direction: Movement changes what happens while you work.

Sitting. Standing. Moving.

We don't believe there is one perfect position for an eight-hour workday.

Sit when you want to sit. Stand when you want to stand. Walk when you can walk.

And when you're at your desk, move when you can move.

Movement is Medicine.

And work is one more place to get some.

The Research Applies Across FluidStance Balance Boards

The Level was the FluidStance balance board used in the research above. The Original, Level, and Plane Cloud share the same fundamental functional ride and multidirectional movement principle. FluidStance applies the research findings from the Level to its balance-board family based on that shared functionality. The individual models have not each been separately studied.
