Mayo Clinic Research

What did Mayo Clinic find out?

Essentially, Mayo Clinic has confirmed that by using your FluidStance® deck, a wobble board intended to be used with a standing desk, you’re actively burning calories by allowing for more movement throughout the day.

In his research, Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic tested 30 office workers of varying age and body type. During the study, these individuals engaged in the following:

  • Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) for 90 minutes
  • Sitting for 20 minutes
  • Standing for 20 minutes
  • Standing on the FluidStance for 20 minutes
  • Walking for 15 minutes at 1.6km/hr, 15 minutes at 3.2km/hr, and for 15 minute at 4.8km/hr, for a total walking time of 45 minutes.

Energy expenditure and heart rate were then measured for 20 minutes. Dr. Levine found that on the FluidStance deck, energy expensiture increased by 19.2% vs. sitting.

Who is Dr. James A. Levine?

The expert who coined the frequently cited term “sitting is the new smoking,” Dr. James Levine has dedicated his scientific career to promoting health in adults and children through education and innovation by researching the effects of excessive sedentary time. Through three decades of research funded by the NIH, Dr. Levine's team has pioneered the science of non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) and the harm associated with sedentariness. Low NEAT and increased sedentariness are major causes of obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, and two dozen other chronic disease and conditions. This work, published in journals such as Science and Nature, has resulted in broad societal impact and policy change.
