What is NEAT™ Certification?
NEAT stands for the science of Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, developed by Mayo Clinic. To qualify for NEAT™ Certification, a product must increase energy expenditure over sitting by more than 10 percent.
Why is NEAT™ Certification important?
Essentially, Mayo Clinic has confirmed that by using your FluidStance deck, you’re actively burning calories by allowing for more movement throughout the day.
Who is Dr. James A. Levine?
The expert who coined the frequently cited term “sitting is the new smoking,” Dr. James Levine has dedicated his scientific career to promoting health in adults and children through education and innovation by researching the effects of excessive sedentary time. Through three decades of research funded by the NIH, Dr. Levine's team has pioneered the science of non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) and the harm associated with sedentariness. Low NEAT and increased sedentariness are major causes of obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, and two dozen other chronic disease and conditions. This work, published in journals such as Science and Nature, has resulted in broad societal impact and policy change.
More About NEAT:
Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating, or sports-like exercise. It ranges from the energy expended walking to work, typing, performing yard work, undertaking agricultural tasks, and fidgeting. Even trivial physical activities increase metabolic rate substantially, and it is the cumulative impact of a multitude of exothermic actions that culminate in an individual's daily NEAT.
